This research explores the artistic reception of Poliphile’s Songe in the context of 16th and 17th century Italy and France. First published in Venice in 1499, the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili is an illustrated work that deeply marked the Renaissance, attracting the interest of many scholars and enjoying an important bibliography. Our methodology focused on a comparative analysis of the Italian and French editions of Poliphile’s Songe, with particular emphasis on their illustrations. The first chapter offers an overview of the birth of typography in Europe and the history of printed and illustrated books in Venice in the 15th century, then in Paris in the 16th century, highlighting publishers, the technique of engraving and the artists who contributed to the realization of Poliphile’s Italian and French Dream. The second chapter adopts an iconographic and comparative approach, studying the relationship between text and image in Italian and French editions and engravings from a stylistic point of view. This analysis reveals that French illustrations are one of the most obvious examples of the artistic reception of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili in the sixteenth century. Finally, the last chapter identifies and presents Italian and French works that draw their inspiration from this humanist book, demonstrating its survival and influence in the geographical areas of Italy and France in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Cette recherche explore la réception artistique du Songe de Poliphile dans le contexte de l’Italie et la France du XVIe et XVIIe siècles. Publié pour la première fois en 1499 à Venise, l’Hypnerotomachia Poliphili est un ouvrage illustré qui a profondément marqué la Renaissance, suscitant l’intérêt de nombreux érudits et jouissant d’une importante bibliographie. Notre méthodologie s’est focalisée sur une analyse comparative des éditions italienne et française du Songe de Poliphile, en mettant particulièrement l’accent sur leurs illustrations. Le premier chapitre offre une vue d’ensemble sur la naissance de la typographie en Europe et sur l’histoire de livre imprimé et illustré à Venise au XVe siècle, puis à Paris au XVIe siècle, mettant en lumière les éditeurs, la technique de la gravure et les artistes ayant contribué à la réalisation du Songe de Poliphile italien et français. Le deuxième chapitre adopte une approche iconographique et comparative, étudiant le rapport entre texte et image dans les éditions italienne et française et les gravures d’un point de vue stylistique. Cette analyse révèle que les illustrations françaises sont l’un des exemples les plus évidents de la réception artistique de l’Hypnerotomachia Poliphili au XVIe siècle. Enfin, le dernier chapitre identifie et présente des œuvres italiennes et françaises qui tirent leur inspiration de ce livre humaniste, démontrant sa survivance et son influence dans les aires géographiques de l’Italie et la France au XVIe et XVIIe siècles.
