Tecnologia e balistica nei primi decenni del Novecento: il caso Merrett

Ballistic investigations underwent significant transformations between the late nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century. Previously, these investigations were primarily conducted by police officers or physicians without specific training in forensic sciences. However, at the beginning of the twentieth century, a significant shift occurred: investigations into victims' bodies began to be more frequently entrusted to experts and specialized scholars, who utilized a wide range of knowledge in the study of cadavers to precisely determine the cause of death. A paradigmatic example of this advancement, which will be the subject of analysis in this thesis, is the Merrett case. The Merrett case concerns the death of Mrs. Merrett, which occurred in 1926. The subsequent trial, held at the High Court of Edinburgh the following year, involved some of the most distinguished ballistic scholars of that era, who relied on the most recent studies and techniques in the field.

Le indagini balistiche hanno subito notevoli trasformazioni tra la fine dell’Ottocento e la prima metà del Novecento. In precedenza queste indagini erano condotte principalmente da ufficiali di polizia o da medici senza una specifica formazione nelle scienze forensi. Ad inizio Novecento, invece, si verificò un cambiamento significativo: le indagini sui corpi delle vittime cominciarono ad essere affidate con maggior frequenza a esperti e studiosi specializzati, i quali utilizzavano un vasto repertorio di conoscenze nello studio dei cadaveri per determinare con precisione la causa della morte. Un esempio paradigmatico di questo avanzamento, che sarà oggetto di analisi nella presente tesi, è il caso Merrett. Il caso Merrett tratta della morte della Signora Merrett, avvenuta nel 1926. Tale processo, svoltosi presso la High Court di Edimburgo l’anno seguente, coinvolse alcuni dei più illustri studiosi di balistica di quell'epoca, che si avvalsero degli studi e delle tecniche più recenti in materia.
