The myth of the good pathogen indicates the assumption, also commonly held by the medical community, that a new human infectious disease will tend, over time, to evolve into lower forms of virulence. Both the history of human infectious diseases and experimental models of virulence evolution show that this trait can evolve into quite different forms depending on a number of ecological and cultural variables. By also briefly reviewing the history of some human epidemics, this thesis aims to analyze the theory of the good pathogen, to observe what are the characteristics of the evolution of virulence according to evolutionary biology, and to analyze some mathematical models that describe the evolution of virulence of a pathogen according to specific basic factors.

Abstract
The myth of the good pathogen indicates the assumption, also commonly held by the medical community, that a new human infectious disease will tend, over time, to evolve into lower forms of virulence. Both the history of human infectious diseases and experimental models of virulence evolution show that this trait can evolve into quite different forms depending on a number of ecological and cultural variables. By also briefly reviewing the history of some human epidemics, this thesis aims to analyze the theory of the good pathogen, to observe what are the characteristics of the evolution of virulence according to evolutionary biology, and to analyze some mathematical models that describe the evolution of virulence of a pathogen according to specific basic factors.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
