Val di Sole is an Alpine valley and it is located in the North-Western part of the Province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige Region, Northern Italy. Pedoclimatic and geological characteristics, combined with its position in the middle of the Alpine chain, give it a particular vocation for agriculture. Val di Sole is located among mountains ranges and passes, so it has always been an area of transits, meetings and trade. The terraced system on the Northern slope of the valley is Southern-facing and there, ce-reals (rye, bailey, wheat, buckwheat) and potatoes were cultivated from the Middle Ages to the 1970s. Since then, due to the change of the economic conditions, the terraces have been abandoned, or at most cultivated as meadows. The abandonment of the terraces has led to severe ecosystem imbalances, forest reappropriation and hydrogeological, landscape and cultural problems. Currently, a shy attempt at restoration finds the greatest difficulty in the costs and in the uncertain perspective of the availability of farmers for profitable and long-lasting maintenance of the terraces. The aims of this work are: to describe the terraces of Val di Sole from a historical and traditional perspective, to define their current use through the analysis of data collected between 2015 and 2020 by the Trentino Landscape Observatory (Osservatorio del Paesaggio Trentino), to analyse the effects of abandonment of terraces and to examine possible perspectives proposed by local administrations with the purpose of bringing at least part of the terraced surfaces back to an efficient state of pristine from a hydraulic, agronomic, landscape and cultural-identity point of view.
