"El gran duque de Moscovia y emperador perseguido" is a theatrical comedy written by Lope de Vega which, compared to other works by the playwright, has not received significant critical attention. This study aims to investigate the reasons behind the staging of this work in Spanish theaters, analyzing the historical, cultural, and political context of 17th-century Russia. The complex plot revolves around the figure of Prince Demetrius and his adventures to reclaim the throne of Muscovy. Lope de Vega's work also seems to reflect themes pertinent to contemporary Spanish reality, particularly the issue of the myth of the return of the king, analogous to the figure of Demetrius. Furthermore, the comparison with Calderón de la Barca highlights how both playwrights of the Golden Age use foreign settings to explore political, social, and metaphysical issues.
