Nowadays, the impact that digital platforms have on the everyday life of people has changed the way in which also century old activities like news publishing are pursued; today news are mainly being sourced online and the previous actors involved, such as news publishers and writers, had to start dealing with big platforms that give access to users news publishers’ publications without providing them with the fair remuneration, taken out from the profits made, that they should be receiving. To regulate the matter, different EU Member States attempted various legal approaches e.g the Spanish and German “link tax” however, none of them lasted long; in 2019, finally, the EU Parliament decided to propose the EU CDSM 2019/790 Directive (“Directive on Copyright and related rights in the Digital Single Market”) to try harmonizing the different Member State copyright laws, to add new exceptions and limitations to the already applied EU Copyright law and to provide an higher level of protection to the rightsholders involved.
