Inflation has recently become a hot topic again, driven upwards by an expansive economic and fiscal policy in response to the demand shock caused by COVID-19. This situation of high inflation is certainly unusual, something that financial markets and even the real economy are not accustomed to. Therefore, the purpose of this academic work is to provide a definition of inflation and to assess the current situation regarding the recent evolution of one of the most important and central macroeconomic indicators, as well as the primary driver of most central bank economic policies. We will investigate how inflation expectations have formed and how consumers perceive this phenomenon in real terms in the United States over a timeframe ranging from 2016 to the end of 2024. Proceeding with an analysis of quarterly data on the inflation rate and perceived inflation, we will then examine the mismatch that occurs between these two facets of the same phenomenon to understand and investigate the demographic-based causes.

Abstract
Proceeding with an analysis of quarterly data on the inflation rate and perceived inflation, we will then examine the mismatch that occurs between these two facets of the same phenomenon to understand and investigate the demographic-based causes.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
