LE GRANDI RIVOLUZIONI DELLA FARMACIA ITALIANA

The pharmacy is an institution that supported humanity through the centuries, always focusing on the health of citizens. It may seem that this long duration is due to its ability to remain static and unchanging. On the contrary, over the centuries it never remained the same, but rather, it faced revolutionary changes. And this mutable, flexible, adaptable nature has been the key of its survival. In our work, we wanted to discuss those great revolutions that characterized Italian pharmacy from its birth to today, with particular focus on the pharmacy in Veneto region of Italy. In other words, from apothecary to neighborhood pharmacy, passing through herbal apothecary, spagyric pharmacy, chemical pharmacy, pharmacy as governmental service, and pharmacy as facility of the National Health Service. Our work dedicates a chapter to each revolution, nine identified in total, starting from the very birth of pharmacy, which was itself a huge revolution. Each one has been described and explained through careful bibliographic research, referring to original documents. Observations and comments are partly ours and partly drawn from the most important texts on the history of Italian pharmacy. This thesis demonstrates that pharmacy is a lively institution, always in motion, progressing, and seeking new developments and variations. Being pharmacists, therefore, means participating in a vibrant environment, that is perpetually emerging and renewing itself, oriented towards the future, yet based on the solid foundations of its important past.

La farmacia è una istituzione che ha accompagnato gli uomini nei secoli tenendo sempre al centro la salute dei cittadini. Può sembrare che questa lunga durata sia accompagnata o addirittura dovuta ad una sua presunta capacità di rimanere sempre solida ed immutabile. Al contrario, nel corso dei secoli non è mai rimasta la stessa ma anzi, ha affrontato dei cambiamenti rivoluzionari. E proprio questa sua natura mutevole, flessibile, adattevole, è stata la chiave della sua sopravvivenza. In questo nostro lavoro, abbiamo voluto ripercorrere quelle grandi rivoluzioni che hanno caratterizzato la farmacia italiana dalla sua nascita ai nostri giorni, con particolare focus sulla farmacia in Veneto. In altre parole, dalle aromatorie alla farmacia presidio di prossimità, passando attraverso la spezieria medicinale, la farmacia spagirica, la farmacia chimica, la farmacia come servizio dello stato e la farmacia come elemento del Servizio Sanitario. Il nostro lavoro dedica un capitolo per ogni rivoluzione, nove individuate in totale, a partire dalla stessa nascita della farmacia che è stata essa stessa un’enorme rivoluzione. Ognuna è stata descritta e spiegata attraverso un attento lavoro di ricerca bibliografica, facendo riferimento a documenti originali. Osservazioni e commenti sono in parte nostri e in parte attinti dai più importanti testi di storia della farmacia. Questa tesi dimostra che la farmacia è un'istituzione viva, vivace, sempre in movimento, in progresso, alla ricerca di nuovi sviluppi e declinazioni. Essere farmacisti quindi significa partecipare ad un ambiente vivo, ad una professione perpetuamente emergente e rinnovantesi, rivolta al futuro, pur sulle solide basi del suo importante passato.
