The paper stands as a research synthesis of studies in the literature on the radioactive disaster that occurred in Goiânia, Central Brazil, in 1987. The first chapter is designed to provide a global framework of the event. In it, the dynamics of the event will be described as they occurred chronologically, in order to understand the health impact caused by radiation exposure and the representation of the disaster. In the second chapter, on the other hand, the synergetic relationship between autobiographical memory and historical memory will be examined, thus the effect they exert in defining a specific social identity, such as that of the ‘cesium cops’. All this in order to understand the role of anniversaries in the commemoration of the disaster. Finally, the third chapter will be devoted to the criteria officially used to define the victims and who are, by virtue of these, the claims and struggles for recognition of those excluded. The aim is to claim the adoption of new paradigms of response to the emergency, attentive not only to the official parameters that biomedicine provides, but also to the experience of the victims and their testimonies of pain and suffering.

Abstract
The aim is to claim the adoption of new paradigms of response to the emergency, attentive not only to the official parameters that biomedicine provides, but also to the experience of the victims and their testimonies of pain and suffering.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
