This thesis addresses the figure of the witch, analyzing its evolutions dictated by social changes and how these also influence iconographic representations. Initially the archetype is treated in the biblical context and the antipodal vision between Eve and Lilith, body and soul is described. The changes and motivations that led to witch hunts in medieval and Renaissance times are taken into consideration, also dealing with the case of Salem County. Subsequently, some studies conducted by anthropologists such as Evans-Pritchard, James Frazer, Margaret Murray concerning the figure of the witch are discussed. In the final part, the current situation of the reclaiming of the term witch in the transfeminist struggle is analyzed.
