The main theme of my thesis is the psychoanalytical interpretation of the tragedy of "Hamlet". Firstly, I analyse the Oedipus Complex theorised by Sigmund Freud in "The Interpretation of Dreams" and reclaimed by Ernest Jones in "Hamlet and Oedipus". I also consider the movie Hamlet directed by Laurence Olivier in order to show the psychoanalytical point of view in cinematography. The study moves to the comparison between Hamlet and Laertes – his double – highlighting their similarities and differences. My aim is to understand if the Oedipus Complex, which is associated to the character of Hamlet, can be applied even to Laertes, after considering the relationship with his sister Ophelia.
