Essayism is considered a hybrid literary genre, capable of relating the interiority of its authors to public discussion. Since the forms of narration of the self are multiple and elusive, this thesis aims to define the relationship between autobiography and essay in the writing of women in the second half of the Italian twentieth century, focusing in particular on The Little Virtues (1962) by Natalia Ginzburg. The anthology is analyzed in terms of the purposes and communication typologies through which the author declines the dimension of morality and the vision of private relationships. In the Italian twentieth century, a trend develops that combines aesthetics with ethics: writers such as Ginzburg, Morante, Ortese and Campo share a vision of literature as an art that must be both aesthetically relevant and ethically significant and show a firm awareness of their creative forces. The relationship between autobiography and identity is explained within a society in which being a writer is synonymous with sentimentality and the social value of writing is often questioned by the authors themselves. These tendencies are analyzed paying particular attention to the narrative strategies that Ginzburg implements within the stories and which make the writing of the authorial self that of a collective we.

Abstract
These tendencies are analyzed paying particular attention to the narrative strategies that Ginzburg implements within the stories and which make the writing of the authorial self that of a collective we.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
