This dissertation aims to explore the topic of literary commitment, specifically focusing on two well-known authors, Voltaire and Émile Zola. The first chapter will present a general analysis of the above-mentioned phenomenon, delving into its definition and profound meaning, portraying the so-called “committed author” and listing the concerned and most exploited literary genres of the “engagement”. In the second chapter, I will talk in detail about Voltaire’s commitment to the Calas Affair, and, in the third chapter, I will focus on Émile Zola and the Dreyfus Affair, one of the most scandalous judicial errors of the late XIXth century. This paper additionally looks at how cultural and religious prejudices led two innocent men to condemnation.
