Baudelaire’s man suffers from a pain: the Spleen. The Spleen is composed by a myriad of feelings which drives the man into a condition made up of anguish, sorrow and metaphysical anxiety. This pain is analysed in its entirety. Its essence, nature and features are described through a path that begins with its origin. The path then continues with its characteristics, the link it has with Baudelaire and concludes with its modernity. This study follows a chronological order and underlines the importance of starting form the past in order to comprehend the modernity of this pain in current society. The purpose of this research is thus to understand that Baudelaire’s pain is modern even if its genesis originates from the past.
