This thesis presents a focus on the North Berwick witch trials (that took place in Scotland between 1590 and 1593) and the literary work inspired by such events: Daemonologie, written by King James I after his experience as an active participant in the trials, and published in 1597. The first chapter offers an overview of witchcraft ideology in sixteenth-century Scotland, as well as an explanation of the legal theory and the legal process behind witchcraft trials. In this chapter a section regarding the sceptical works of Reginald Scot and Johann Weyer on the topic of witchcraft is also included. The second chapter exposes the events related to the trial by looking at the legal proceeding against the protagonists of the North Berwick affair, who appeared before the King to defend themselves against charges of treasonable sorcery. The third chapter presents an analysis of Daeomnologie, the motives behind its existence and what King James I aimed to achieve with his work.
