Employing a theoretical framework on post-industrial cities and the urban crisis of the 1970s and 1980s as a point of departure, this dissertation aims to explore Liverpool’s transformation from a purely port city to a post-industrial city, focusing on urban regeneration and new post-industrial landscapes. With the use of texts and articles on cultural geography, the Liverpool case of study is explored through an analysis of the geographical, historical, and cultural context. The research examines the circumstances that led to the city becoming a venue for significant events, such as the designation as European Capital of Culture in 2008, the hosting of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023 and, more recently, the hosting of Taylor Swift's "The Eras Tour" concerts, and the impact of such events on urban development. Moreover, the controversy surrounding Liverpool's removal from the UNESCO World Heritage Sites List is examined, with particular attention paid to the reasons that led to this decision. Furthermore, a photographic essay is presented to analyse the distinctive cultural characteristics of some of Liverpool’s most emblematic neighbourhoods. These include the Docks and the Waterfront, which have been transformed from an old industrial port into vibrant recreational areas; Liverpool ONE shopping district; the Cavern Quarter, linked to the history and music of The Beatles; Anfield and the internationally renowned Liverpool F.C. football stadium; and Chinatown and its historic Chinese community. The objective of this dissertation is to present a nuanced and multifaceted understanding of Liverpool, highlighting the complexities of urban regeneration and the significance of cultural heritage. Through an analysis of these elements, the dissertation offers a comprehensive insight into the processes that have shaped and continue to influence Liverpool’s dynamic and evolving urban landscape.
