Animal welfare has become an increasingly significant concern within the livestock industry, driven by growing public awareness, stricter regulations, and a heightened focus from farmers. This thesis delves into the issue of tail biting in pigs and the wide-spread practice of tail docking as a supposed solution. While tail docking can temporarily reduce the incidence of tail biting, it fails to ad-dress the underlying causes, often rooted in management or structural deficiencies within the farming system. This practice hinders the identification and correction of the stress factors that trigger abnormal behaviors in pigs. Consequently, tail docking is merely a band-aid solution, masking underlying issues that should be resolved through the implementation of improved management practices and interventions that enhance welfare conditions and mitigate stressors. Such measures should be introduced from the earliest stages of a piglet’s life and should include environmental enrichments that cater to the species’ ethological needs. A dedicated chapter in this thesis presents a case study analyzing the measures adopted by Soc. Agr. di Renato Bellini to eliminate tail docking and reduce tail biting at their Site 2. Through the use of animal welfare indicators (presented in tabular for-mat), the effects of these interventions are objectively assessed. This analysis is par-ticularly relevant given the ongoing strengthening of regulations aimed at phasing out tail docking from January 1, 2025.

Abstract
This analysis is par-ticularly relevant given the ongoing strengthening of regulations aimed at phasing out tail docking from January 1, 2025.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
