This thesis proposes a comprehensive reassessment of the letter "Laetentur coeli" addressed by Cyril of Alexandria to John of Antioch in 433 and containing the so-called Formula of Reunion, which marked the end of the Nestorian controversy. The present work aims to provide an alternative reading of the most delicate phases of the theological confrontation between Alexandria and Antioch and, in particular, an analysis of the profound doctrinal implications of the letter that takes into account the most recent Oriental academic interpretations. The purpose of the research is to demonstrate that, contrary to the vulgate of Western studies, the christology presented by the "Laetentur coeli" is entirely consistent with Cyril's reflections prior to the debate with Nestorius and John, and therefore does not represent a compromise theology in a perspective of a mere political and ecclesiastical appeasement. It will also be illustrated that, as an ideal recapitulation of the Council of Ephesus, the text under consideration is still crucial for the development of dialogue between Chalcedonian and pre-Chalcedonian Churches.

Abstract
It will also be illustrated that, as an ideal recapitulation of the Council of Ephesus, the text under consideration is still crucial for the development of dialogue between Chalcedonian and pre-Chalcedonian Churches.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
