This work examines the role of ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot, in teaching and learning English as a foreign language (EFL), and its application and perceptions by EFL teachers and learners. Even though AI has already been diversely utilized in the education system, the application of ChatGPT is a relatively new concept in education, as well as in EFL teaching and learning. It offers innovative and interactive ways for English language education. In addition to reviewing various research works about ChatGPT and its influence on English language education, the questionnaires were conducted among English teachers and experienced learners to understand how they utilize ChatGPT for educational purposes and their perceptions of its effectiveness. Key findings reveal that the majority of the students and teachers share the experience of using ChatGPT and find it quite effective to apply for specific tasks. Nonetheless, some report the issues related to the limitations and misuse of ChatGPT. Overall, this study can contribute to the growing body of research on AI and ChatGPT in language education and can offer insights into integrating advanced technology such as ChatGPT in the EFL context.
