L’arte del passeggiare: dalla flânerie alla fotografia surrealista

The thesis aims to delve deeper into the importance that, starting from the reflections of Charles Baudelaire, the art of the early 20th century and in particular surrealist photography reserved for the practice of walking. The first chapter opens with the introduction to the practice of flânerie, an occasion in which for the first time Baudelaire proposes the activity of walking as an aesthetic experience. After having analysed the figure of the flâneur, the second chapter has the historical avant-gardes as its object of analysis: starting from the "Dadaist walks" the act of walking takes on more and more importance and the relationship between artist and city becomes more and more central in artistic research. The last chapter will delve into surrealist deambulations, which using the photographic medium were able to capture the unconscious and disturbing energies of everyday reality. The greatest space will be reserved for the figure of Eugène Atget, in particular his fundamental role as a forerunner of the entire surrealist movement.

L’elaborato si pone l’obiettivo di approfondire l’importanza che, a partire dalle riflessioni di Charles Baudelaire, l’arte di inizio 900 e in particolare la fotografia surrealista ha riservato alla pratica del passeggiare. Il primo capitolo si apre con l’introduzione alla pratica della flânerie, occasione in cui per la prima volta Baudelaire propone l’attività del passeggiare come esperienza estetica. Dopo aver analizzato la figura del flâneur, il secondo capitolo ha come oggetto d’analisi le avanguardie storiche: a partire dalle “passeggiate dadaiste” l’atto del camminare assume sempre più importanza e il rapporto tra artista e città si fa sempre più centrale nella ricerca artistica. L’ultimo capitolo approfondirà le deambulazioni surrealiste, che servendosi del mezzo fotografico sono state in grado di cogliere le energie inconsce e perturbanti della realtà quotidiana. Lo spazio maggiore verrà riservato alla figura di Eugène Atget, in particolare al suo fondamentale ruolo di anticipatore dell’intera corrente surrealista.
