An effective approach to conducting an in-depth analysis on a topic as broad and complex as Neoclassicism consists, first of all, in referring to the most emblematic figures, the most prominent personalities, both in Italy and abroad. This does not imply, however, that the examples discussed in this study necessarily represent the best in an absolute sense; the intent is not to establish rankings of worth, but rather to highlight those figures who, for me and for many others, have taken on the role of indispensable reference points. I feel I consider a personality to be a “reference” when he or she is proven capable of providing clear and decisive answers facing doubts or questions, exercising a clarifying and enlightening function. Beyond an outstanding artistic production, a “reference” figure must also be able to stand out as a guide, similar to a well-structured book with a clear index and a complete bibliography. Anyone who approaches such works must be able to understand with clarity the deep motivations that inspired their creation, thus bridging the gap between aesthetic observation and the reasons behind their execution. This thesis, therefore, aims to explore how Antonio Canova was able to reinvent the canons of classical sculpture, with particular attention to his masterful use of light, which infused the works with a vitality and modernity capable of redefining the models of Greek and Roman antiquity. Starting with Winckelmann's famous definition of “noble simplicity and quiet grandeur,” a pillar of Neoclassicism, the theoretical and artistic roots that inspired Canova, an artist who was able to embody these ideals, redefining them in light of the aesthetic needs of his time, will be analyzed. The paper will be structured into several chapters, each of which will investigate a key aspect of the artist's connection with light, from his early works as a youth to his international establishment as a sculptor of European nobility. The last section of the thesis will be devoted to the production of technical and descriptive fact sheets for the virtual or audiovisual fruition of Canova's works, developed following an interview with the team of experts who oversaw the digitization of the sculptures during the exhibition. This project not only highlights the benefits of new technologies in enriching the museum experience, but also offers an educational vision that transforms the contemplation of the works into an interactive and immersive experience. The ultimate goal is to stimulate the public's curiosity and engagement, facilitating a deeper understanding of Canova's art and the neoclassical context in which he worked, through an accessible yet sophisticated language.
