The paper deals at first with the problematic nature of the essay as a genre, as well as with the difficulties faced by scholars who try defining it. As a matter of fact, the essay is often mixed up with surrounding short forms, or worse, it is accused of being the preferred instrument of an impressionistic and pre-scientific type of literary criticism. The thesis then moves on to observe the different manifestations of the essay in Italy, specifically during the first half of the 20th century and through the works of critics and essayists such as Emilio Cecchi, Roberto Longhi and Giacomo Debenedetti. Lastly, the focus shifts to Mario Praz's "Penisola Pentagonale", "The Romantic Agony", and "The House of Life", to seek out which literary devices, techniques and hybrid forms are emplyed in his essays.

Abstract
The paper deals at first with the problematic nature of the essay as a genre, as well as with the difficulties faced by scholars who try defining it. As a matter of fact, the essay is often mixed up with surrounding short forms, or worse, it is accused of being the preferred instrument of an impressionistic and pre-scientific type of literary criticism. The thesis then moves on to observe the different manifestations of the essay in Italy, specifically during the first half of the 20th century and through the works of critics and essayists such as Emilio Cecchi, Roberto Longhi and Giacomo Debenedetti. Lastly, the focus shifts to Mario Praz's "Penisola Pentagonale", "The Romantic Agony", and "The House of Life", to seek out which literary devices, techniques and hybrid forms are emplyed in his essays.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
