Cosmogony and Theocracy in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials

This thesis will delve into the makings of the fantasy universe of His Dark Materials, by renowned author Philip Pullman. First, I will focus on the relationship between the author and organized monotheistic religions, pointing out how universally recognized Christian notions, such as original sin and the Fall, are reinterpreted to convey messages of moral emancipation and life affirmation. I will then focus on the angelic theocracy that governs Lyra's universe, highlighting differences and similarities with their biblical counterparts. Finally, I will examine Dust, the divine particles that make up the cosmos, and how the entire universe of His Dark Materials revolves around their benefic influence.
