Fernando Pessoa e l'eteronimo Alexander Search: dall'influenza degli autori inglesi alla peculiarità di A Very Original Dinner

The aim and the purpose of my dissertation are to be able to understand how an author like Pessoa could have been pushed to write a work like A Very Original Dinner. To do this, I started from the origins, that is, from when Pessoa moved with his mother and stepfather to Durban, South Africa. There he had access to English schools which allowed him to begin to master a second language in addition to Portuguese. English will then be a language that he will speak and write as his second native language. Even the last sentence he utters on his deathbed will be in English. Subsequently, after the analysis of A Very Original Dinner, I preferred to continue with an analysis of the phenomenon of heteronymy and the theme of the mask that we often find in his works.

L’obiettivo e il fine della mia tesi sono quelli di riuscire a capire come un autore come Pessoa possa essere stato spinto a scrivere un’opera come A Very Original Dinner. Per farlo, sono partita dalle origini, cioè da quando Pessoa si è trasferito assieme alla madre e al patrigno a Durban, in Sudafrica. Lì ha avuto accesso a scuole inglesi che gli hanno permesso di iniziare a padroneggiare anche una seconda lingua oltre al portoghese. L’inglese sarà poi una lingua che parlerà e scriverà come sua seconda lingua madre. Addirittura, l’ultima frase che pronuncerà in punto di morte sarà in inglese. Successivamente, dopo l’analisi di A Very Original Dinner, ho preferito proseguire con un’analisi del fenomeno dell’eteronimia e il tema della maschera che spesso e volentieri ritroviamo nelle sue opere.
