The thesis titled, "The Balkan Route: an analysis of the needs of migrants arriving in Trieste and of the Italian response," explores the complex phenomenon of migration through the Balkan route, focusing on the needs of migrants arriving in Trieste and the response provided by Italy. The research is structured around the central question: Is there compatibility between the needs of the migrants and the response Italy is able to provide? In Chapter 1, the historical context and development of the Balkan route, the profiles of the migrants, their travel experiences, and the main humanitarian, legal, social and psychological needs upon arrival in Trieste. Chapter 2 analyzes the Italian response, including government policies on reception and integration, the role of local institutions in Trieste, and the intervention of associations and NGOs in the region. Chapter 3 offers a comparison of migrants' needs and responses, identifying areas of compatibility and incompatibility. The impact of any discrepancies is also examined on migrants and the host community, with a consideration of future prospects in light of the increasing migration flows and available resources. The conclusions summarize the main findings, answer the research question and discuss the implications for future policies, proposing solutions to improve the compatibility between themigrants' needs and Italy's responses.
