This thesis examines the processes of democratization and democratic backsliding in Poland and Hungary, aiming to identify similarities and differences between the two countries. After the fall of communism in 1989, both nations consolidated democratic regimes, but since the 2010s, they have shown signs of democratic erosion. Through a qualitative comparative analysis, the thesis explores three key phases: communist rule, the democratic transition, and recent democratic backsliding. The research concludes with an analysis of recent developments, such as the defeat of PiS in Poland in 2023, which could signal a potential return to democracy.

Abstract
This thesis examines the processes of democratization and democratic backsliding in Poland and Hungary, aiming to identify similarities and differences between the two countries. After the fall of communism in 1989, both nations consolidated democratic regimes, but since the 2010s, they have shown signs of democratic erosion. Through a qualitative comparative analysis, the thesis explores three key phases: communist rule, the democratic transition, and recent democratic backsliding. The research concludes with an analysis of recent developments, such as the defeat of PiS in Poland in 2023, which could signal a potential return to democracy.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
