This thesis offers a nuanced comparison between the UK and Italy as it explores the historical development and current state of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs in Italy and the UK. The goal of the research is to identify the institutional and sociocultural elements that have influenced the understanding and implementation of diversity, equity and inclusion in academic institutions in both countries by following the development of DEI policies and practices over time. The study aims to clarify the difficulties and achievements of DEI implementation in these higher education contexts through an examination of historical records, policy frameworks and the websites of selected institutions. The results deepen the understanding of how historical and contextual circumstances impact current DEI initiatives and offer insightful information to institutions, educators, and policymakers who are dedicated to creating inclusive, varied and equitable learning environments
