The choice of this topic stems from a problem I felt at first hand, being the daughter of immigrants who grew up in Italy. Often relatives and friends who speak Italian have great difficulty in expressing their state of illness in a transparent and clear manner when it comes to health, sometimes explaining themselves by translating expressions used in their culture but which betray the true meaning of what they want to express, thus conveying a message to health personnel that is different from the real one. During my various placements, I have witnessed many foreigners being hospitalised where the language barrier was a huge problem as they did not speak Italian and their carers did not know any other language to communicate, so they were faced with a need to which they responded with paralysed assistance as they could not understand what the priority problem was. Another reality where the problem became even more evident is in home care, when the foreigner is the nurse who enters a culturally and religiously different family context, where he or she has to offer care to terminally ill patients often with symptoms such as pain and with culturally different conceptions of how to deal with it and treat it, the management of this situation becomes very challenging when there is also a language barrier.

La scelta di questo argomento nasce da una problematica sentita in prima persona essendo figlia di immigrati cresciuta in Italia, spesso parenti e amici nonostante che parlano l’italiano fanno molta fatica a esprimere in maniera trasparente e chiara il loro stato di malessere quando si tratta di salute, si spiegano a volte traducendo espressioni usate nella loro cultura ma che vanno a tradire il vero significato di quanto vorrebbero esprimere trasmettendo cosi al personale sanitario un messaggio diverso da quello reale. Durante i vari tirocini ho assistito a moltissimi stranieri ricoverati dove la barriera linguistica rappresentava un problema enorme in quanto non parlavano l’italiano e chi li assisteva non conosceva altre lingue per comunicare, così ci si trovava di fronte ad un bisogno al quale risponde un’assistenza paralizzata in quanto non riesce a capire quale era il problema prioritario. Un'altra realtà dove il problema diventava ancora più evidente è nell’ assistenza domiciliare, quando ad essere straniero è l’infermiere che entra all’ interno di un contesto familiare diverso culturalmente e religiosamente, dove deve offrire assistenza a pazienti terminali spesso con sintomi come il dolore e con concezioni culturalmente diverse di come affrontarlo e trattarlo, la gestione di tale situazione diventa molto impegnativa quando è presente anche una barriera linguistica.
