Introduction: The end of life represents a crucial moment for the terminally ill patient and his family and that’s the reason why palliative care plays a key role in the disease management: it significantly improves the quality of life, thanks to support both in terms of physical pain management and psychological support. Materials and methods: A literature review was carried out to identify what kind of intervention should be implemented in palliative care and which ways to compensate for the lack of a specific approach. To draft the thesis, 12 articles were identified from the PubMed database, as well as numerous online resources from specialist websites on the subject of end of life. Results and discussion: From the nurses' own experiences, it is clear the perception of a lack of suitable preparation to accompany the patient towards the end of life. Among the necessary actions to be implemented to improve the healthcare offer in the field of palliative care, there is first of all specific training, followed by communication and collaboration skills between the people involved in the end-of-life process. Conclusion: This study highlights the lack of a quality offer in the field of palliative care. Despite the attention that has developed in recent years, there is still no standardized and formalized approach capable of uniformly guaranteeing quality support, which is able to respect the individual needs of the person. There’s the need to invest in the training of healthcare personnel, and in particular nurses, so that they are able to intercept and manage the needs of the patient and his family, through a transversal approach that involves both the clinical and emotional and psychological spheres. KEY WORDS: palliative care, nurse role, pain, communication, education.
