INTRODUCTION - The nursing profession in Italy is facing a growing crisis of staff shortages, accentuated by the 2020 pandemic, which led to an increase in turnover and resignations. This situation, part of the global phenomenon known as the Great Resignation, has caused many professionals to reconsider their job roles. The main causes of this crisis include burnout, job stress, lack of recognition, and unstable management of work schedules. At the same time, job satisfaction is closely linked to the desire to stay in the sector. OBJECTIVE - The research aims to identify the factors that influence job satisfaction and motivation among nurses and social and health workers, essential to ensure quality care. A qualitative study was conducted at the Nephrology Unit of the Hospital of Dolo (VE). The aim is to promote an understanding of positive experiences, which are essential to maintain the focus on personal care and enhance the role of nurses and social and health workers. MATERIALS AND METHODS - To investigate the professional satisfaction of nurses and social and health workers, a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews was used to collect significant personal experiences. The questions were formulated by focusing on four macro-topics: work content, professional relations, patient relations and professional growth, with three questions for each topic. Ethical authorization and informed consent were obtained to ensure confidentiality. The interviews took place in a comfortable environment, collecting demographics and work experience. The sample includes nurses and social and health workers from the Nephrology Unit of the Dolo Hospital, with a total of ten interviews conducted. RESULTS – The results reveal a complex vision of the profession: although the sample is motivated in their career choice, many express discontent with how nursing has changed over time, perceiving a greater distance from the patient due to bureaucratic burdens. Health and social care workers, on the other hand, value a greater ability to focus on patients, which allows them to establish more meaningful connections and offer quality care. CONCLUSIONS – The interviewees highlight the importance of establishing empathetic relationships with patients, believing that the feeling of being useful and the continuous enrichment of skills are key aspects of their work. Collaboration and open communication between colleagues are considered essential, although intergenerational tensions emerge. The good relationship with patients is considered one of the greatest satisfactions, despite the growing expectations on their part. In addition, participants emphasise the importance of lifelong learning, but warn that the evolution of the profession and new technologies can be a source of stress, especially for those who are older. However, the bureaucratic and organizational burden has reduced the time spent caring for patients, generating dissatisfaction and demotivation. In summary, despite professional satisfaction, recent challenges have put a strain on the morale of operators, highlighting the tension between the commitment to provide quality care and the increasing bureaucratic pressures.
