Background. Violence is a global problem that causes the death of approximately 1.3 million people per year (2.5% of global mortality) and is the fourth absolute cause of death for the 15-44 age group (WHO, 2014). The WHO global report on violence calls for a pyramid approach to the problem: deaths due to violence are the most visible and easily detected events in official statistics, but they represent only the apex. If you scroll down the pyramid, you find a larger slice of the population: survivors of violence who are somehow taken over by health care systems and receive some form of treatment. But the largest portion is made up of people who suffer violence "in the shadows" and which do not find support in official statistics, but which can be reported in population studies and research. Purpose and objectives. The primary objective of this paper is to research in literature the most recent evidence on emerging critical issues related to nursing care of victims of gender-based violence in the Emergency Department. The secondary objective is to identify innovative strategies for improving nursing care. Materials and Method. For the writing of this thesis, a literature search was conducted through the databases PUBMED, COCHRANE LIBRARY, CINAHL ULTIMATE, SCOPUS and APA PSYCINFO applying precise selection criteria. Results. The literature search identified 17 studies from primary and secondary literature. The results of the analysis of selected documents confirm the existence of multiple critical issues, some related to the victim and others to the organizational policies of the host structures. Conclusions. Addressing training gaps is essential to improve the ability of nurses to provide effective, safe and empathic intervention to victims of gender-based violence. Furthermore, clear protocols, institutional support and a collaborative approach between different health professionals are needed as gender violence must be addressed in a multi-professional way, This is the only way to ensure quality assistance for victims of gender-based violence. Keywords. The following keywords were used: "violence against women", "knowledge", "emergency department", "nursing care", "gender based violence", "emergency nursing", "intimate partner violence", "gender violence", "victims of violence" and "nurse knowledge".
Background. Keywords. Sono state utilizzate le seguenti parole chiave: “violence against women”, “knowledge”, “emergency department”, “nursing care”, “gender based violence”, “emergency nursing”, “intimate partner violence”, “gender violence”, “victims of violence” e “nurse knowledge”.
