Topic: Pet Therapy, or animal-assisted intervention, is a complementary therapy to standard clinical practice that promotes improvements in the physical and psychological well-being of patients, leading to a positive change in quality of life. The interaction with an animal, trained for this practice and thus able to establish a relationship with humans, can reduce anxiety, fear, and stress, generate a positive change in clinical parameters and, therefore, promote an overall improvement of the hospital experience. Objective: This study aims to investigate the role of Pet Therapy in the nursing care of hospitalized children and pediatric oncology patients. The goal is to describe the impact of such therapy both at a psychological and physical level. Methodology: The work consists of a review of the existing literature, in order to analyze the effects of Animal-Assisted Interventions on hospitalized children and within pediatric nursing care. The articles considered are nine, from 2012 to 2023. Results: It is highlighted how the possibility of allowing children to interact with trained animals can represent a useful tool for promoting the well-being and comfort of pediatric patients, giving rise to relevant and rewarding experiences and arousing positive perceptions of the hospital environment on the part of children. Discussion and Conclusions: Animal-Assisted Interventions appear to have a beneficial impact on the health of pediatric patients, although further research is needed. However, it is essential, in order for the effect to become favorable and concrete, that Pet Therapy be adequately integrated into nursing care.
Tema.
