BACKGROUND The aging population has led to an increase in geriatric patients using mobile dental prostheses. These devices provide a solution for oral rehabilitation in individuals with tooth loss, but they require proper hygiene to maintain the overall health of the oral cavity. Cleansing must be performed using effective and appropriate devices and techniques so as to preserve the materials that make up the prosthesis. However, the variety of approaches and the absence of precise guidelines has generated discord among health care professionals regarding which methods are best to recommend to patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS The main objective of this research is to analyze the main hygiene and cleaning techniques for removable dental prostheses, evaluating their effectiveness, practicality and associated risks. It also addresses the problem of the lack of consensus among professionals in the field, with consequences for patient information and adherence to cleaning practices. The methodology adopted is based on a literature search, focusing mainly on consulting the PubMed and ScienceDirect databases. RESULTS Through the review of multiple articles, it was possible to paint a comprehensive picture of hygiene interventions for removable dentures, showing that the combination of mechanical and chemical cleaning methods is the most effective. However, the variability in the results of the studies requires further research. The importance of proper maintenance of dentures to ensure not only oral hygiene but also the overall health of patients also emerged. Finally, there is a lack of global consensus on denture cleaning recommendations, with differences between the guidelines of professionals and the methods adopted by consumers. CONCLUSIONS A more evidence-based approach is needed to optimize denture care practices, ensuring good quality of life and chewing function for patients. It is well established that denture hygiene interventions contribute significantly to reducing oral inflammation and improving patient comfort. However, the lack of clear, evidence-based guidance hinders practitioners in formulating consistent recommendations. Therefore, the development of future more rigorous and homogeneous clinical studies focusing on the antimicrobial effects of procedures and material compatibility is essential to develop shared, evidence-based guidelines.
