This document analyses the effects of the main degradation factors characterising the Low-Earth-Orbit space environment on CRYSTALS (ChRomatic, Yielding and Smart Technologies for Anti-Light Shielding), a device developed to study the feasibility of non-mechanical space telescope covers by J2050 students team in the laboratories of the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Padua for the RedPill mission. A first part of the document describes the circum-terrestrial space environment by offering an overview of its main components, the damage they cause and the most widespread protection techniques adopted for each agent. The second part offers a detailed analysis of the device’s degradation during its operational life, primarily concerning the radiation and neutral environments. To acquire the results, a digital model of CRYSTALS was created and subjected to various space environment simulation software (SPENVIS, OMERE, SYSTEMA). The data collected aims to demonstrate that the deterioration of the device due to exposure to the space environment is minimal. Consequentially the device will operate according to the requirements defining the mission successful for its entire operational life.
Questo studio vuole analizzare gli effetti dei principali fattori di degradazione che caratterizzano l’ambiente spaziale in orbita bassa su CRYSTALS (ChRomatic, Yielding and Smart Technologies for Anti-Light Shielding), un prototipo di cover non meccanica per telescopi sviluppata dal team studentesco J2050 interamente all’interno dei laboratori del Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale dell’Università di Padova per la missione RedPill. Una prima parte dello studio caratterizza l’ambiente spaziale circum-terrestre proponendo una panoramica dei principali componenti, dei danni di cui questi sono causa e delle tecniche di protezione più diffuse adottate per ciascun agente. Segue un’analisi dettagliata della degradazione che il dispositivo si stima subirà nel corso della vita operativa, dovuta primariamente all’ambiente radiativo e neutro. Per l’acquisizione dei risultati si è proceduto alla creazione di un modello digitale di CRYSTALS da sottoporre a diversi software di simulazione dell’ambiente spaziale (SPENVIS, OMERE, SYSTEMA). I dati raccolti hanno l’obiettivo di dimostrare che il deterioramento del dispositivo dovuto all’esposizione all’ambiente spaziale è di entità tale da non interferire con il suo funzionamento secondo i requirements richiesti per il successo della missione per tutta la durata della stessa.
