This thesis aims to analyze in detail what is defined as the Atlantic Alliance (NATO) through its history, the impact it has had on the international scene and the role of Italy. The first chapter is divided into paragraphs in which the motivations and needs that led to the creation of a military Alliance are initially presented, which creates a bridge between the states of North America and Western Europe. subsequently, all the main historical events concerning the military organization are defined, from its origin in 1949 until the 2000s. The second chapter, however, is divided into three paragraphs, which describes Italy's membership of the Atlantic Pact, the alignment policies envisaged by the Organization and the actual NATO military bases on Italian soil. In conclusion, Western Europe and, in the specific case of Italy, with the signing of the Atlantic Pact, were protagonists of a pro-American policy that is still in place today.
