INTRODUCTION During hemodialysis sessions, the nurse is deeply involved in the overall management of the treatment, addressing and resolving issues that may arise during the procedure. This literature review focuses on the overall impact of physical exercise, both active and passive, during hemodialysis sessions on patients with chronic kidney disease, considering their age, whether young or elderly. OBJECTIVE The aim of the literature review is to analyze the role of the nurse in improving the quality of life and tolerance to hemodialysis treatments through physical exercise, both active and passive, during the session. METHODS The literature search was conducted using the scientific database PubMed between April and May 2024. Articles published between 2014 and 2024 were selected, concerning patients aged 18 and older and written in English, Spanish, or Italian. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The study selection was conducted following the PRISMA method, identifying 11 articles, including clinical trials with one controlled and one randomized, controlled prospective studies, randomized controlled trials, observational studies, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews with meta-analyses. These studies highlighted that physical exercise during hemodialysis sessions can reduce depressive symptoms, improve blood pressure management, and contribute to better treatment tolerance. CONCLUSIONS The nurse, along with the entire medical team, plays a key role during the hemodialysis session, introducing physical exercise as an essential non-pharmacological intervention to improve the quality of life and treatment tolerance in hemodialysis patients. Through the customization of the program, patient education and monitoring, prevention of complications, motivation, and documentation of progress, the nurse significantly contributes to optimizing health and advancing clinical practice.
