BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 67% of prisoners suffer from at least one disease. Meanwhile, the percentage of the free population affected by a disease is only 18%. Prisoners are affected by communicable infections more than twice as much as the free population. Prisoners get sick more often for two reasons: first, they engage in risky behaviors, and second, the living conditions in prisons favor the spread of disease. OBJECTIVE: Find strategies for health prevention and promotion in prisons to improve the health conditions of inmates and to investigate the role of nurses in these actions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two research questions were investigated with corresponding PIOs. The research was explored through the MeSH database on Midline using the PubMed search engine. RESULTS: Eight articles were analyzed. The research revealed that prevention and health promotion in prisons is carried out through three focal points: implementation of educational interventions conducted by nurses, screening and/or vaccination following health education, and distribution of needles within prisoners. The role of the nurse is essential for the implementation of these programs. CONCLUSION: Nurses play an important role in implementing educational interventions. Their engagement, in fact, promoted adherence to screenings and vaccinations. This path required specific training by nursing staff on the topic, before implementing health education. Expanding the research would allow to find other prevention and promotion strategies and reaching a portion of the population outside prisons but in disadvantaged situations.
