OBJECTIVE: This thesis aims to review the most recent literature on improving the psychophysical well-being of nurses in light of the quality of care provided and with the intent to prevent the consequences of work-related stress. METHODS: The study was conducted as a literature review, selecting articles through bibliographic searches in electronic databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library. The search focused on articles published from 2013 to 2024; a total of 16 articles were examined and reviewed for the final review. RESULTS: The findings show that work-related stress can significantly compromise both physical and mental health, negatively impacting work productivity, personal life, and overall quality of life. Self-care and awareness-focused strategies, such as the IARA® model or the REBT program based on relational-emotional therapy, proved essential for managing stressful situations. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance, reducing working hours, and fostering better collaboration and communication among colleagues significantly reduced perceived work stress, resulting in higher quality of care and job satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS: Proper stress management must prioritize the personal and mental well-being of nurses. This requires a consistent commitment to self-care practices, promoting greater awareness and resilience, expressing emotions, and, above all, seeking help when necessary. Ensuring a satisfactory quality of life and an adequate work-life balance is essential to reduce perceived stress, improve job satisfaction, and minimize negative consequences such as turnover, absenteeism, and burnout. With the right management strategies, nursing can become a less burdensome profession, enabling professionals to maintain their motivation and preserve their invaluable gift of helping others.
