Currency, understood as money, has undergone profound transformations over time. In the first chapter, the characteristics of money are analyzed, retracing its history and evolution, leading up to its various modern forms, including digital currency. The second chapter delves into the topic of cryptocurrencies and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), examining the benefits and risks associated with their introduction. The third chapter provides a global overview of the development of CBDCs across different countries. Finally, the fourth chapter presents a case study of The Bahamas, the first country in the world to adopt a CBDC, analyzing the reasons behind this choice.
La moneta, intesa come valuta, ha subito nel corso del tempo profonde trasformazioni. Nel primo capitolo si analizzano le caratteristiche della moneta, ripercorrendo la sua storia e la sua evoluzione, fino ad arrivare alle diverse forme moderne, inclusa la moneta digitale. Il secondo capitolo approfondisce il tema delle criptovalute e delle valute digitali delle banche centrali, le CBDCs, esaminando i vantaggi e i rischi legati alla loro introduzione. Il terzo capitolo offre una panoramica globale sullo sviluppo delle CBDCs nei diversi Paesi. Infine, nel quarto capitolo, viene presentato il caso studio delle Bahamas, il primo Paese al mondo ad aver adottato una CBDC, analizzando le motivazioni che hanno portato a questa scelta.
