Analyzing the relationship between religion and politics is an important issue in understanding the dynamics of the Cold War. Beyond the Iron Curtain, the Churches, from the Catholic to the various Protestant denominations, soon became the only partially autonomous organizations within the state. Despite the trend toward secularization inaugurated in Europe by the French Revolution, the Churches almost inertially transmuted into the depository organizations of the local (national) canon, preserving it from Soviet infiltration. Such considerations prompt inquiries as to the role religion played in the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (German Democratic Republic, GDR), the Cold War frontier country par excellence and spearhead of the Muscovite sphere of influence. The relationship between socialist political power and the Christian religion within the GDR, declined in its evangelical and Catholic denominations, will therefore be the subject of the following dissertation. The focus will be on the attempt on the part of the state to erase the ecclesiastical influence on the Eastern German society, eventually seeking to replace the Church and subsume the entire life of the civitas in itself.

Abstract
The focus will be on the attempt on the part of the state to erase the ecclesiastical influence on the Eastern German society, eventually seeking to replace the Church and subsume the entire life of the civitas in itself.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
