Female genital mutilation constitutes a serious violation of human rights, with significant impacts on the physical and mental health of women and girls. This thesis explores the crucial role of midwives in preventing and combating FGM. Through a literature review, the skills and responsibilities of midwives in raising community awareness, training and supporting affected women are highlighted. This paper has been written in the form of a literature review and explains how a midwife should behave when a female genital mutilation carrier presents herself to her. The literature examined was searched in certified international and worldwide databases, such as PubMed or MedLine; the guidelines used were also searched in the sites of RCOG, ACOG, WHO, UNICEF. In the paper, the effects that female genital mutilation has on women were studied; these effects range from initial complications, such as haemorrhage, haematomas and painful wound healing, to more long-term complications, such as physical and social discomfort, pain during intercourse or fear of childbirth. The midwife is the pivotal figure in a woman's life, in fact from adolescence to menopause the midwife can help and advise the woman on the various stages of her life. When a woman with genital mutilation presents herself to the midwife, the midwife will know that the words she will have to use will be different from a woman without mutilation. The research emphasises the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, integrating midwifery practice with education strategies. The conclusions of the paper offer practical recommendations to improve the role of midwives in the fight against FGM, contributing to greater awareness and more effective interventions in the field of women's health.

Abstract
The conclusions of the paper offer practical recommendations to improve the role of midwives in the fight against FGM, contributing to greater awareness and more effective interventions in the field of women's health.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
