La ricerca dell'immortalità. Dal mito alla tecnica.

Death and the quest for immortality are one of the central themes that have characterised societies of all times and historical periods. It is a complex and ambiguous theme that has animated debate and reflection in every individual but which until not too long ago remained relegated, at least for most, to an abstract and ideal world. However, with the advent of new technologies, especially in the bio-medical field, there is now the possibility for modern society to unhinge and transcend those natural limits that until now were thought to be invincible. What has long been hoped for, or believed to be desired, may now become a reality. These sophisticated technologies, given their potential, have fuelled the hope in the most visionary of defeating old age and then death in the first place. Research and projects to achieve this goal are also financed for the most part by technology tycoons and have already been launched but the paths taken are innumerable; they range from the simplest and least ambitious goal of simply extending life by a few decades to the most complex, which consists of transferring the entire reality into cyber space. Specifically, the thesis is divided into several sections, each of which will argue, analyse and explore various issues that relate to the theme of immortality and a possible, future immortal society. In the first chapter, there will be a brief introduction to the topic, while the second chapter will discuss the concept of immortality and the struggle that, in its own way, each society has waged against death, as well as the different conceptions that each society and culture has had of this phenomenon over time. Finally, the motivations behind the quest for immortality will also be explored. Subsequently, the third chapter will detail some contemporary perspectives, approaches and protagonists in the struggle for immortality. The focus will be precisely on emerging technologies for the unlimited extension of life, such as genetic engineering and cellular rejuvenation, cryogenics and body preservation, and finally the project aimed at the transfer of the mind into digital devices. The examples given for each section of these endeavors have been chosen to provide examples from the ‘least’ ambitious and complex to the most visionary and elaborate. In the fourth and final chapter, the social and economic impact of immortality will be addressed. Specifically, it will touch upon the possible changes in the social structure, the economic implications of longevity, the moral and ethical implications of genetic manipulation, and finally the role of emerging technologies in the challenge between life and death. Perspectives and suppositions, those reported, especially in the last chapter, are the result of a vision of a possible future, closely linked and dependent on the outlook we use today to read our current reality. What has been dealt with, in fact, concerns a conflict, that of man with death, which who knows whether it will ever come to a complete end and if so, what its actual consequences will be on the world and society as we know it today.

La morte e la ricerca dell’immortalità sono uno dei temi centrali che hanno caratterizzato le società di ogni tempo ed epoca storica. Un tema complesso e ambiguo che ha animato dibattiti e riflessioni in ogni individuo ma che fino a non troppo tempo fa restava comunque relegato, almeno per i più, ad una sfera astratta e ideale. Tuttavia, con l’avvento delle nuove tecnologie, soprattutto in ambito bio-medico, vi è ora la possibilità per la società moderna di scardinare e oltrepassare quei limiti naturali che fino ad oggi si ritenevano essere invarcabili. Ciò che per molto tempo si è sperato, o si è creduto di desiderare, potrebbe ora diventare realtà. Queste sofisticate tecnologie, visto il loro potenziale, hanno alimentato nei più visionari la speranza di sconfiggere in primo luogo la vecchiaia e successivamente la morte. Ricerche e progetti per raggiungere questo obiettivo, sono finanziati per lo più da magnati della tecnologia e sono già stati avviati, ma i percorsi intrapresi sono innumerevoli; si va dal più semplice e meno ambizioso obiettivo di allungare semplicemente la vita di qualche decennio sino al più complesso che consiste nel trasferimento dell’intera realtà nel cyber spazio. Nello specifico, l’elaborato è suddiviso in diverse sezioni, in ognuna delle quali si provvederà ad argomentare, analizzare e approfondire diverse tematiche che si rifanno al tema dell’immortalità e ad una possibile, futura società immortale. Nel primo capitolo, vi sarà una breve introduzione al tema, mentre nel secondo capitolo si tratterà del concetto di immortalità e della lotta che a modo suo, ogni società ha intrapreso contro la morte, oltreché delle diverse concezioni che ogni società e cultura ha avuto nel corso del tempo di questo fenomeno. Si approfondiranno, infine, anche le motivazioni che stanno dietro la ricerca dell’immortalità. Successivamente, nel terzo capitolo si approfondiranno nel dettaglio alcune prospettive, approcci e protagonisti contemporanei della lotta per l’immortalità. Il focus saranno appunto le tecnologie emergenti per l’estensione più o meno illimitata della vita, quali: l’ingegneria genetica e il ringiovanimento cellulare, la criogenia e la conservazione del corpo ed infine il progetto volto al trasferimento della mente in dispositivi digitali. La scelta degli esempi riportati per ogni sezione di tali tentativi, è stata realizzata in modo da poter fornire esempi dal “meno” ambizioso e complesso al più visionario ed elaborato. Nel quarto ed ultimo capitolo, si affronterà l’impatto sociale ed economico dell’immortalità. Precisamente, si toccheranno i temi inerenti i possibili cambiamenti nella struttura sociale, le implicazioni economiche della longevità, le implicazioni morali ed etiche della manipolazione genetica ed infine il ruolo delle tecnologie emergenti nella sfida tra vita e morte. Prospettive e supposizioni, quelle riportate, soprattutto nell’ultimo capitolo, frutto della visione di un possibile futuro, strettamente legata e dipendente dallo sguardo che oggi utilizziamo per leggere la nostra attuale realtà. Ciò di cui si è voluto trattare, infatti, riguarda un conflitto, quello dell’uomo con la morte, che chissà se avrà mai completamente fine e se mai effettivamente sarà così, quali saranno le sue effettive conseguenze sul mondo e sulla società che conosciamo noi oggi.
