The admission of a critically ill child to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has a significant impact on all family members, especially the parents (Tse et al., 1987). The emotional experiences reported by parents include anxiety, stigma, guilt, distress, despair, a sense of loss of control, fear and helplessness, along with numerous other psychological challenges (Al Maghaireh DF et al., 2016). Understanding the parental experience and the challenges associated with having their child admitted to the NICU is crucial to identify the coping strategies that promote adaptation and foster the development of positive coping mechanisms (Catapano et al., 2024). The objective of this thesis is to explore themes related to the experiences of parents with children admitted to the NICU updating the systematic review "Systematic review of qualitative studies exploring parental experiences in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit" (Al Maghaireh DF et al., 2016). Qualitative studies published between 2014 and 2024 were included, selected through the following databases: CINAHL, PubMed, Science Direct, Springer Link, Psychology and Behavioral Science Collection, and Web of Science, using keywords related to parental experiences in the NICU. Screening was conducted using the Covidence software. To assess the quality of the qualitative studies the "Critical Appraisal Skills Program" (CASP) was utilized. A thematic analysis was conducted to analyze the results.
