This thesis analyses climate change as a phenomenon and reports on the first studies done on the subject, it is analysed how the phenomenon has been perceived by the public and what role it plays in public discourse. It also exposes how the phenomenon has been communicated over time. In particular, the use of cognitive frames and metaphors in the representation of climate change is examined. Frames are presented as interpretative structures that influence how people take in and interpret information. Special attention is paid to the use of frames in political discourse. The thesis discusses how various studies have shown a clear difference between Democrats and Republicans in the United States on this issue. This polarisation is further explored through the linguistic analysis of the election programmes of the Italian centre-left and centre-right parties for the 2024 European elections, employing text mining techniques to identify the linguistic choices of the various parties. The objective is to observe how the political formations chose to represent the issue and what lexical priorities were used. Finally, research using the questionnaire tool investigates the social perception of climate change and the most effective metaphors influencing the understanding of the phenomenon, highlighting which images or concepts remain most impressed in public opinion. The thesis concludes by highlighting the crucial role of language and communication in shaping the public debate on climate change.
