In this thesis it was my objective to analyze the figures of the two protagonists, Bess in "Breaking the Waves" and Selma in "Dancer in the Dark", with particular attention to their individuality and peculiarities. The two films are part of the "Golden Heart Trilogy", which focuses on the goodness that characterizes the protagonists, and thanks to which the director Lars von Trier brings into vogue the hypocritical and cruel nature of the society where we live. Furthermore, in the thesis I also analyze the two protagonists from a melodramatic point of view: in fact, they perfectly embody the heroines of melodrama, who literally go so far as to sacrifice themselves in favor of their own goal or to protect a loved one.

Abstract
In this thesis it was my objective to analyze the figures of the two protagonists, Bess in "Breaking the Waves" and Selma in "Dancer in the Dark", with particular attention to their individuality and peculiarities. The two films are part of the "Golden Heart Trilogy", which focuses on the goodness that characterizes the protagonists, and thanks to which the director Lars von Trier brings into vogue the hypocritical and cruel nature of the society where we live. Furthermore, in the thesis I also analyze the two protagonists from a melodramatic point of view: in fact, they perfectly embody the heroines of melodrama, who literally go so far as to sacrifice themselves in favor of their own goal or to protect a loved one.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
