Translating Death’s Duel by John Donne into modern Italian

In the following study, I will undertake a translation into modern Italian of the sermon Death's Duel by John Donne, a famous English preacher and poet born in London in 1572. I am aware of the contextual differences between me, a 21st century translator, and John Donne, a 17th century English poet. Indeed, both the ideologies and the historical and religious contexts have changed considerably in almost 400 years, but I think this is what makes the translation process interesting. Before the translation, I will introduce the author by considering the most relevant aspects of his life and literary career, and then focus on his sermons production and in particular on his last sermon, Death's Duel. Further on, I will reflect on the translation process, analysing the difficulties encountered along the way, mainly linguistic but also regarding the use of italics and punctuation. I will explain the reasons for my choices, the main changes I have made and the aspects I have endeavoured to keep as faithful to the original as possible. Following these analyses, I will address a reflection on the less “practical” aspects of the process, namely the understanding of the main themes of the sermon, also using comparisons with a few other works by Donne containing the same topics. Lastly, I will ponder on the difficulty in translating Death’s Duel in a more modern context and language. In fact, these difficulties are mainly related to the distance in both temporal and linguistic context between the original work and its translation. To conclude I will also make a brief comparison with Giorgio Melchiori's translation of the same sermon, highlighting the most substantial differences and similarities.

Nel seguente studio, intraprenderò una traduzione in italiano moderno del sermone Death's Duel di John Donne, famoso predicatore e poeta inglese nato a Londra nel 1572. Sono consapevole delle differenze contestuali tra me, traduttrice del XXI secolo, e John Donne, poeta inglese del XVII secolo. In effetti, sia le ideologie che i contesti storici e religiosi sono cambiati notevolmente in quasi 400 anni, ma credo che sia proprio questo a rendere interessante il processo di traduzione. Prima della traduzione, introdurrò l'autore considerando gli aspetti più rilevanti della sua vita e della sua carriera letteraria, per poi concentrarmi sulla sua produzione di sermoni e in particolare sul suo ultimo sermone, Death's Duel. In seguito, rifletterò sul processo di traduzione, analizzando le difficoltà incontrate lungo il percorso, soprattutto linguistiche ma anche relative all'uso del corsivo e della punteggiatura. Spiegherò le ragioni delle mie scelte, le principali modifiche apportate e gli aspetti che ho cercato di mantenere il più possibile fedeli all'originale. Dopo queste analisi, affronterò una riflessione sugli aspetti meno “pratici” del processo, ovvero la comprensione dei temi principali del sermone, anche attraverso il confronto con alcune altre opere di Donne contenenti gli stessi argomenti. Infine, rifletterò sulla difficoltà di tradurre Death's Duel in un contesto e in un linguaggio più moderni. Infatti, queste difficoltà sono principalmente legate alla distanza temporale e linguistica del contesto.
