La musicalité dans les vers de Verlaine: approche phonostyilistique

The work of this thesis aims to focus on the linguistic aspect of phonostylistics, applied in particular to the poetry of French poet Paul Verlaine, whose poems are most famous for the musicality of the lines that compose them. In order to understand the common thread linking meaning and sound, we will analyze in particular the poem “Claire de lune,” written by Verlaine in 1869 and part of the collection “Fêtes galantes.” After a brief introduction concerning the figure of this poet from a biographical point of view, we will touch on the above poem from both a semantic and a phonological point of view, analyzing the main features of Verlaine's poetry. After understanding the semantic meaning of this poem, we will see why Verlaine chose to use certain words containing certain sounds rather than other words with different sounds, and how these sounds contribute to the deeper understanding of the meaning of the poem itself. Sounds,therefore, convey meanings. It is therefore possible to guess that they were not chosen at random by the poet Verlaine at the time of writing the verses, but that choice is the result of a careful analysis of those words, those sounds from different points of view, such as that of their nature, intonation and accentuation. It is precisely this aspect that this thesis aims to demonstrate.

Il lavoro di questa tesi si propone di focalizzare la sua attenzione sull’aspetto linguistico della fonostilistica, applicata in particolare alla poesia del poeta francese Paul Verlaine, le cui poesie sono celebri soprattutto per la musicalità dei versi che le compongono. Al fine di comprendere il filo rosso che unisce significato e suono, analizzeremo in particolare la poesia “Claire de lune”, scritta da Verlaine nel 1869 e facente parte della raccolta “Fêtes galantes". Dopo una breve introduzione concernente la figura di questo poeta da un punto di vista biografico, toccheremo la poesia sopra citata sia da un punto di vista semantico che da un punto di vista fonologico, analizzando le caratteristiche principali della poesia di Verlaine. Dopo aver capito il significato semantico di questa poesia, vedremo il motivo per cui Verlaine ha scelto di utilizzare certe parole contenenti determinati suoni piuttosto che altre parole con suoni differenti, e come questi suoni concorrano alla comprensione più profonda del significato della poesia stessa. I suoni,quindi, veicolano significati. È possibile quindi intuire che essi non sono stati scelti a caso dal poeta Verlaine al momento della scrittura dei versi, ma quella scelta è frutto di un’analisi attenta di quelle parole, di quei suoni sotto diversi punti di vista, come quello della loro natura, dell’intonazione e dell’accentuazione. È proprio questo l’aspetto che questa tesi si propone di dimostrare.
