This thesis explores the concept of the unreliable narrator and its function in questioning moral and narrative norms through the analysis of Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita" and Jonathan Littell's "Les Bienveillantes". It is shown how negative empathy, aroused by morally ambiguous narrators, challenges the reader's ethical judgement, inviting them to confront the complexity of evil. Using narratological and theoretical tools, rhetorical strategies and mechanisms of manipulation are investigated, showing how contemporary literature uses unreliability to explore the limits of empathy and storytelling.

Abstract
This thesis explores the concept of the unreliable narrator and its function in questioning moral and narrative norms through the analysis of Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita" and Jonathan Littell's "Les Bienveillantes". It is shown how negative empathy, aroused by morally ambiguous narrators, challenges the reader's ethical judgement, inviting them to confront the complexity of evil. Using narratological and theoretical tools, rhetorical strategies and mechanisms of manipulation are investigated, showing how contemporary literature uses unreliability to explore the limits of empathy and storytelling.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
