This thesis examines the phenomenon of gentrification, focusing particularly on the process that has affected Barcelona, specifically the Raval neighborhood. The paper begins with a detailed definition of gentrification, describing its main characteristics and highlighting how this concept, although originating around 1960, remains current and continues to be relevant today. Gentrification leads to both social and economic redevelopment of the affected areas, and it is divided into three essential phases. It then emphasizes how this phenomenon affects the quality of life of citizens, analyzing the positive and negative effects that emerge in the different phases. The second chapter pays special attention to the urban transformation of Barcelona over the years, noting the influence of mass tourism. The increase in tourism has caused various social tensions, giving rise to the phenomenon of "tourismphobia" and causing conflicts between local residents and international tourists. This has exacerbated social inequalities and led to significant changes in the city's urban structure. The third chapter concludes the analysis with a detailed study of the history, urban development, and socio-economic transformations that the Raval neighborhood of Barcelona has undergone over the years. This phenomenon has impacted the lives and well-being of residents, urban renewal, and the reduction of petty crime.
