Sexuality is a fundamental aspect of well-being and quality of life at every stage of life, including old age. The present study aimed to examine sexual function in a sample of 150 men and women over the age of 50, divided into mature adults (50-64 years) and older adults (over 65 years). The investigation, conducted through the administration of a questionnaire in both paper and online formats, sought to explore the motivations that influence individuals to engage or not engage in sexual intercourse, the factors that enhance sexual arousal and desire, and to assess sexual functioning using the BISF. The results indicated that, although solitary sexual activity tends to decrease with age, it remains present in both genders, with a higher prevalence among men. It was also found that sexual dissatisfaction decreases with age and is higher among men. The motivations for engaging in or abstaining from sexual intercourse were found to be diverse, including sexual, relational, psychological, sociocultural and contextual factors. The study revealed that some women engage in sexual activity in response to their partner's desire or request, suggesting a possible sociocultural influence. Physiological factors, such as organic problems, constitute a motivation for abstaining from sexual intercourse, while other stimuli, such as relational and sexual factors, appear to promote sexual arousal and desire in both genders.

Abstract
Sexuality is a fundamental aspect of well-being and quality of life at every stage of life, including old age. The present study aimed to examine sexual function in a sample of 150 men and women over the age of 50, divided into mature adults (50-64 years) and older adults (over 65 years). Physiological factors, such as organic problems, constitute a motivation for abstaining from sexual intercourse, while other stimuli, such as relational and sexual factors, appear to promote sexual arousal and desire in both genders.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
